It may not seem like much, but just a little neoprene can do a lot to prevent your overlay from sliding. Here’s the method I’ve found to work best.
Use everyday white glue. Do not use Super Glue! (cyanoacrylate) It will fog up the acrylic.
Don’t worry about making a mess. You can scrape off dried white glue with a credit card or other plastic card, and remove fingerprints with a microfiber cloth. You can always start over.
- If the protective paper is still there on the back side of the acrylic overlay, leave the paper on for now.
- Use a toothpick to apply a tiny dab of glue in the engraved area.
- Use a clean toothpick to push the neoprene disc into the engraved area.
- With all the discs in place, carefully turn the overlay over, checking that none of the discs fall off. You’ll want to do this on a flat ceramic plate, cookie sheet, or granite countertop – something where a little glue can be easily cleaned up.
- Press down to seat all the discs. Put some cans of soup or other heavy items on top.
- Let dry for at least an hour.
- Carefully remove the paper backing. If any of the discs come off with it, glue them back into place later. It’s okay to do this after the paper is removed.
- Clean up any excess glue by scraping with a plastic card. Don’t use anything metal.
- Remove fingerprints with a microfiber cloth. I don’t recommend any cleaning agents unless they’re intended for use on acrylic. Soap and water is fine, but you’ll just end up using a microfiber cloth later to clean up the water marks.
