RDI Chest 8: Finishing and Hardware Installation

Back to main instructions page

By this point, you have your chest assembled and nailed together. Now is a good time to hit it with a layer of spray sealant or lacquer, just to give it a nice shine. It’s not a big deal if you end up deciding you want to do this later; spray lacquer won’t damage the hardware.

  • Felt Pads
    • Protect your table; put these all over the bottom of the chest. Something like this.
  • Front RDI Nameplate
    • Attaches with four nails. Also put glue on the back of the nameplate to make it more secure.

  • Rear Hinges
    • Attaches with five screws each. Needs a wooden spacer between the hinge and the box.
  • Front Latches
    • Attaches with six screws each. Needs a wooden spacer between the hinge and the box.
  • Side Handles
    • Make sure you have the handles right-side up, so they will fall down flat against the box but then can be lifted to a 90 degree angle.
    • Take the bracket alone and put in the top two screws, loosely. Then slip the handle itself underneath, set it into the bracket, and hold in place while you put all four screws all the way in.
  • Hasp and Hook
    • Attach the hasp (the curved piece) to the drawer front, and put the two screws in securely.
    • Put the screws for the hook in the front of the box, loosely.
    • Insert the drawer into the box and insert the hook into the hasp, then tighten all the screws.
